Marie tends to like doing things on her own when it’s time to give birth — and this time was no exception.
Her guardian, Shaddiah, normally stays close to home once the due date window opens (as do I), but this was the day before Marie’s due date — so she thought it would be safe to run a quick errand. Of course, Marie took full advantage of that hour to bring three kittens into the world. 
When Shaddiah returned, Marie was calm, clean, and very proud of herself.
By the time evening rolled around, eight kittens had arrived — and Marie was resting contentedly with them tucked in around her. When Shaddiah woke the next morning, her daughter had the best news: there were NINE! Marie had quietly delivered her last kitten during the night.
She’s been an excellent mom from the start — keeping her babies close and her nest spotless. A camera is set up downstairs to keep an eye on her overnight, since she insisted on nesting there this time instead of upstairs. (She did try to “borrow” Zara’s 9½-week-old kittens earlier in the week, though. Such a mom — just like her own mother, Arabesque, who used to try to gather all the kittens into her nest too! You can even see a video of her once attempting to drag a 12-week-old boy from another litter to join her newborns here.)

“Marie chirped at Stone and he came to check on her. He sniffed from a respectful distance while she showed off the babies and looked up at him so sweetly before heading off again.”
“They sit in a little mountain of kitten parts — like a big bowl of kittens. They’re warm, soft, and Marie makes the softest babies we’ve ever had.”
Sunray has been hanging out nearby too, watching from a distance like the proud dad he is.
Marie’s doing great — eating well, purring nonstop, and keeping those nine little fluffballs perfectly clean. We’ll keep sharing updates and photos as they grow (shared Google album here), but for now everyone’s healthy, happy, and tucked in.
