Week-by-week breakdown of what's happening with your litter and what you should do

🗓️ Choose Your Week

👶 Weeks 1–2: The Fourth Trimester (& The Drunken Pirate Phase)

Your litter has just arrived. Mama and babies are adjusting, and your job is to stay out of the way while supporting everyone. Around Day 7-10, kittens' eyes start opening and they enter the hilarious "drunken pirate" phase—wobbly, uncoordinated, staggering around with one eye still mostly shut!

What's Happening

  • Eyes closed at birth (start opening around Day 7-10)
  • Fully open by end of Week 2
  • Movement wobbly & clumsy ("drunken pirate" phase)
  • Kittens mostly eating and sleeping
  • All nutrition from mama
  • Mama doing almost all work
  • Bonding between mama and babies is critical

What You Should Do

  • Provide warm, quiet, safe space
  • Feed mama generously
  • Fresh water always available
  • Keep nest clean
  • Brief, gentle kitten handling is okay
  • Wash hands first
  • Check multiple times daily
  • Monitor each kitten's nursing

The Nest

A warm, dark, quiet box or cabinet works great. Mama will nest naturally.

  • Soft, washable blankets and towels
  • Easy in/out access for mama
  • Protected from household traffic
  • Warm spot for mama to regulate temperature

What to Watch For

  • All kittens nursing and gaining weight
  • Mama eating and drinking well
  • No signs of infection
  • Kittens warm and moving normally
Emergency signs: See Medical Guide for any concerns about mama or babies

🌱 Weeks 2–4: The Drunken Pirate Phase Continues

Kittens are hilariously wobbly and uncoordinated—staggering around with wobbly legs. Personalities are emerging, and they're starting to explore outside the nest.

What's Happening

  • Movement is wobbly & clumsy
  • Personalities beginning to emerge
  • Leaving nest for short explorations
  • Starting to notice mama's food
  • Becoming aware of YOU

What You Should Do

  • Continue Week 1-2 care
  • Spend more floor time with them
  • Gentle handling (10-15 min, multiple times)
  • Let them explore you
  • Normal household sounds are fine
  • Monitor each kitten's development

The Magic Moment 🎉

Somewhere in this window: Every time you walk into the room, the kittens run toward you, mewing excitedly in a tiny kitten stampede.

Pro tip: You'll be so enthralled that you'll forget to record it. Don't worry—you'll see it many times. The memory will be perfect.

Expanding Their Space

As kittens leave the nest, they'll need more room. When they climb over a poster board barrier, they're ready for more space.

🍽️ Weeks 4–5: Food Exploration

Kittens are starting to notice mama's food. Some take to wet and dry food quickly, others take their time. Playing with each other and starting to notice toys.

What's Happening

  • Testing wet and dry food
  • Still mostly nursing
  • Litter box training begins
  • Some faster than others (normal!)
  • Playing with each other more
  • Noticing toys
  • Mama nursing demand increasing

What You Should Do

  • Offer wet and dry food separately from litter
  • Introduce shallow litter box
  • Some may use it, some won't yet
  • Keep offering toys during playtime
  • Feed mama generously
  • Continue daily socialization
  • Take photos of exploration

💪 Weeks 5–7: Peak Demand

This is the hardest time for mama. Kittens are eating more solid food but still nursing heavily. Mama needs excellent nutrition and support.

What's Happening

  • Kittens eating more wet and dry food
  • Still nursing (mama working HARD)
  • More consistent with litter box
  • Accidents still happen
  • Playing intensifies
  • Personalities very clear now

Mama Needs You Now

  • Feed her generously
  • Peak nursing demand time
  • Wet food 4+ times daily
  • Unlimited dry food
  • May eat 2–3x normal amount
  • Fresh water always available
  • Monitor her energy and condition

Kittens This Week

  • Eating 3-4 times daily (wet + dry)
  • Using litter box more reliably
  • Accidents still normal
  • Playing hard—supervise safely
  • Continue socialization and handling
  • Take photos and videos!

🐱 Weeks 6–8: Becoming Cats

Kittens are eating more consistently. Litter training is solid. They're starting to look like very small cats now.

  • Eating wet and dry food regularly
  • Consistently using litter box
  • Accidents rare
  • Playing constantly
  • With each other and toys
  • Looking like tiny adult cats
  • Still nursing (mama getting relief)

What You Should Do

  • Feed kittens 3-4 times daily
  • Wet + dry food
  • Continue mama's unlimited dry
  • Monitor litter boxes
  • Play sessions
  • Gentle grooming/handling
  • Start thinking transitions

🚀 Weeks 8–10: Full Run of the House

Kittens have full access to their space. They're fully litter trained, eating well, and playing hard. Mama is almost completely done nursing.

What's Happening

  • Fully weaned
  • May nurse occasionally
  • Mama allows less
  • Fully litter trained
  • Accidents rare
  • Playing hard and sleeping hard
  • Ready for forever homes

What You Should Do

  • Feed wet + dry multiple times daily
  • Let them play
  • Building confidence
  • Weigh weekly
  • Track growth
  • Prepare for transitions
  • Take final photos and videos
  • Final vet check & vaccines

🎉 Weeks 10+: Wild Little Creatures

Kittens at this age are peak personality. They play until they drop, run fast, climb high, jump high, and get into everything. It's fun, funny, and sometimes exhausting—but SO worth it.

What's Happening

  • Fully independent from mama
  • Playing hard—wrestling, running, climbing
  • Jumping
  • Getting into everything
  • Very alert and curious
  • Ready for forever homes

Enjoying This Phase

  • Watch them play—entertainment gold
  • They sleep when tired (hard sleepers)
  • Continue regular feeding and care
  • These weeks go fast
  • Enjoy them!
Pro tip: This is the most fun phase. Try to remember it, because your families will ask "when will they calm down?" and the answer is: "Enjoy it now. It goes by fast."
